Aviator sunglasses first came into being in the mid 1930s. Also known as “pilot’s” glasses, because they were designed for pilots to protect their eyes and to enable them to read their instruments while airborne.

The US Army Air Corp commissioned an optical company called Bausch & Lomb to carry out this development, which was later sold under the name of Ray-Ban and sunglasses were never the same again.

The name Ray-Ban came from Banning the sun’s Rays.
